About Kalpitiya Lagoon

Kalpitiya Lagoon is the most famous area for kiting in Sri Lanka. Both Villa Sethawadi and Sethawadi Kite Centre (on the same property) are right on the lagoon itself.

Size and Area

Kalpitiya Lagoon spans an impressive area, offering ample space for kitesurfers. At its widest point, it's 2 kilometres wide, over a length of about 4 kilometres-- providing a vast playground for kiters of all levels.

Water Depth

The lagoon has an average depth of 0.5 to 2 meters. Surrounded by beaches and mangrove areas, kitesurfers can feel reassured that even if things go wrong and they miss a rescue boat, they are quite unlikely to drift into a dangerous area. So it's easy to sort the gear out and start again. The north end of the lagoon opens into a channel (Dutch Harbor) which leads into the sea, while the southern tip becomes quite shallow.

Surface Conditions

Kalpitiya Lagoon is famous for being a flat-water spot. Kitesurfers in the lagoon have nothing to fear from a shorebreak or choppy waves. The surface remains favorable for freestyle kitesurfing and for beginning kitesurfers, even when the winds are strong.

Tides

Because Kalpitiya lagoon opens into the sea, seawater flushes in and out of the lagoon with each tide. But tidal patterns in Kalpitiya Lagoon are mild, with relatively consistent water levels throughout the day. This allows kitesurfers to plan their sessions without worrying about drastic changes in water depth.

Other Kitesurfing Spots Nearby

  • Kite Safaris to the North Take a day tour to several flat-water spots like Dream Spot, where you can kite either on the ocean or on the protected inshore side, stop for lunch, then downwind to Mini Vella with its famous mirror-like flat water. We can provide a covered boat with driver and kite helper for the trip, lunch and water, and a place in the shade to rest.

  • Wave Downwinder In connection with Elements Resort to the south in Kapaladdy, we’ll drive you to Elements’ launch spot. Helpers will launch your kite there, then ride out to the deep reef-break and play in the waves all the way down to the dedicated wave spot (Donkey Point), then continue downwind to our Kite Hut which sits astride the lagoon and the sea. We’ll catch your kite there, and you can either head back to Villa Sethawadi on our boat right away, or spend some time riding Kalpitiya Lagoon first.

  • Vella Island: Further north and a longer boat ride than Dream Spot, Vella Island is known for its strong winds and flat water.  It’s a favorite among experienced kitesurfers looking for thrilling rides.

  • Puttalam Lagoon Another flat-water spot with steady wind, this one is a short drive away; after the lagoon session you can downwind to the landing spot near Dutch Bay and take the truck back to Sethawadi Villa.

  • The Ocean Just a few steps away from Sethawadi Kite’s Beach Hut, across the strip of sand from Kalpitya Lagoon, is the Laccadive Sea on the edges of the Indian Ocean. If you prefer ocean riding to a flat lagoon, this is the place for you. There may be some shorebreak in the summer, but in the winter windy season the wind is a beautifully smooth cross-on coming from the right, with minimal shorebreak.
